History of the Maple Leaf

First minted in 1979, Gold Maple Leafs are among the most popular and recognizable gold coins in the world. At its inception, the only other bullion coin was the South African Krugerrand. However, this coin which was not widely available because of boycotts on apartheid-era South African goods. From their beginning, Maple Leafs have been—and remain—wildly popular. By the early ‘80s, they were outselling Krugerrands.

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a record-setting Gold Maple Leaf coin that weighed 100 kg (3,215 Troy Ounces), with a face value of $1 million. This ultimate Maple Leaf was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest gold coin. Don’t try to buy it, though—there is only one in the world and it isn’t for sale.

In recent years, Canada has introduced new security features as anti-counterfeiting measures. In 2013, a laser-micro-engraved textured maple leaf was added on a small area of the reverse side of the coin. In the center of this mark is a numeral denoting the coin’s year of issue, only visible under magnification. This puts the Canadian Maple Leaf on the cutting edge of bullion coin security.

Composition and Character

The Maple Leaf is pure .9999 fine gold (24 carat). At the time of its issue, it was the only such coin in the world. The Krugerrand (and the Eagle that came later) include an alloy. Each contains a full troy ounce of gold, but is .9167 fine (22 carat). Some people like the color of pure gold; others don’t mind the slightly different tint that comes with an alloy. Some are attracted to the unrivaled fineness of 24-carat gold. And still others appreciate the Canadian coin’s simplicity of design, with Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and a single maple leaf signifying the nation on the reverse.

Since gold content is the same, whichever one prefers is a matter of personal taste. 24-karat gold coins are softer and scratch more easily than 22-karat, which were intended to stand up to the stresses of circulation. Leafs are particularly popular in India and the Far East, where pure gold is the most accepted and familiar form of bullion.

When shopping for Canadian Maple Leafs, you may wish to consider price. Common date issues tend to carry lower premiums than rarer options, making Leafs a very cost-efficient way to purchase an ounce of gold.

The Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canadian currency both for transactions and as a store of wealth. The Canadian Mint serves the public interest, but also functions in a commercial, for-profit manner without taxpayer support. In addition to the Canadian dollar and cent, Canada’s Mint prints precious and base metal collector coins, such as Maple Leafs.
