Buying and Selling Bullion Coins Online

From 1 ounce gold classics like the Gold Buffalo to silver mainstays like the American Eagle, these gold and silver coins make an excellent addition to any investment portfolio. Intricate designs make coins a great way to invest in physical gold and silver and also enjoy timeless artistry. We offer many weights, mintage years, and types of bullion coins for you to invest.

Popular Gold & Silver Bullion Coins

Coins are popular investment options for precious metals investors because they are highly liquid. They’re also easily transported, stored, and divisible. Not to mention the designs associated with some of these coins are truly exquisite. Below we detail some of the most popular gold and silver coins in the industry.

American Eagles

Struck from gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, American Eagle coins are a staple in any precious metals portfolio. They are very popular, easy to sell, and backed by the protection of their status as legal tender currency in the United States.

Canadian Maple Leafs

Like the Eagle, Canadian Maple Leafs are minted in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, and are adorned with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. As bullion coins, gold and silver Canadian Maple Leafs are legal tender and offer a store of value that lies outside of day-to-day commerce. A Gold Maple Leaf has a face value of 50 dollars, with the silver at five dollars.

American Gold Buffalos

The American Gold Buffalo is a younger American bullion coin than the Gold Eagle, and serves as an alternative for those who prefer pure gold; the Buffalo is 24-carat (99.9 percent gold), while the Eagle is a 22-carat alloy of gold/silver/copper (91.67 percent gold). Its name comes from the American Bison on the coin’s reverse. Above the buffalo reads the United States motto, E pluribus unum. Gold Buffalos are minted only in 1-ounce coins.

South African Krugerrand

The South African Krugerrand is a gold coin named after the former South African President Kruger, and the country’s currency, the rand. Production levels have varied in the coin’s history, but it is a good investment for investors looking to diversify their portfolio. It is a 22-carat gold/copper alloy.

Australian Kangaroos

The Gold Kangaroo is one of the only coins that change design every year From 1986 to 1989, these coins featured “Australian Gold Nugget” design. Recent Gold and Silver Kangaroos feature a kangaroo on the reverse, with Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Older Nugget designs could be worth more than their actual weighted value, depending on the year. Note that the Silver Kangaroo, which hasn’t been around as long, does not change in design.

Chinese Pandas

The Chinese Panda comes in gold and silver editions. Like the Australian Kangaroo, it changes its design every year. First introduced in 1982, the coins come in varying sizes and denominations. Sometimes the design includes two pandas. The coins’ face value can vary with the design as well.

Queen’s Beasts

The Queen’s Beast is a relatively new coin series. First issued by the British Royal Mint in 2016, the gold and silver series each include 10 designs of the heraldic Queen’s Beasts statues at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation that represent her royal ancestry. The silver coin is especially desirable, as it marks the first time a two-ounce United Kingdom silver bullion coin has been made.

Austrian Philharmonic Coin

The Austrian Philharmonic comes in silver and gold and is named after the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. Both sides of the coin are designed in honor of this musical legacy, and make it among the world’s most beautiful. The obverse of the coin depicts the pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein’s Golden Hall; the reverse illustrates instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic, including Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, and four violins centered on a cello.

British Gold Sovereign

The British Gold Sovereign is a commemorative bullion coin known as the “Chief Coin of the World.” It has been accepted across the globe as money for over 200 years. Brand-new sovereigns are 22K and pay homage to their long history as a circulating coin, making them a good long-term investment.

Numismatic vs. Bullion Coins

Bullion coins are not primarily a speculative investment. It is true that they will probably rise in price, especially over the long haul. But most people buy and hold them as a historically-proven commodity that will hold their value through good times and bad. In times of extreme inflation, they will be indispensable because precious metal coins will be accepted in commerce when paper money is not.

Numismatic (older and/or rarer) coins are purchased either by speculators looking to cash in on price appreciation or collectors. Collecting numismatic coins can be a profitable pursuit, and also highly enjoyable in its own right. But purchasing numismatic coins requires a more sophisticated knowledge of coin history, condition and market fluctuations than is appropriate for the casual buyer. We are not a numismatic coin dealer.

IRA Eligible Gold & Silver Coins

Many U.S. investors choose to purchase coins in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA), because of their tax-free or tax-deferred status. Using a simple “self-directed” IRA, you can contribute to your IRA by investing in true physical gold and silver and still enjoy these tax benefits.

When shopping for your IRA, simply look for products labeled “IRA Approved” on our product detail pages. These coins are certified to meet the IRS’s simple but important criteria for precious metals investments allowed in an IRA.

Before you purchase, make sure you’ve notified your custodian to authorize GoldSilver.com as a trading partner. Once that’s done, just place your order and specify your IRA as your source of funds at checkout. We’ll take care of the rest, including working with your custodian to transfer funds and title to the gold.

Don’t already have a gold-ready IRA? See our list of preferred custodians or learn more about investing in physical gold and silver using your IRA.
