Gold and Silver’s October Selloff: What Changed for Long-Term Owners?

October’s selloff followed a familiar pattern: silver fell more sharply than gold. Silver typically makes larger percentage moves in both directions, amplifying gains during rallies and losses during declines. At a snapshot recorded on October 30, 2026, at 16:45 UTC, gold was down about 6.3% from September 30. Silver had lost 18.6%. Both metals had been slightly higher early in the month.

The month brought a widening performance gap, mixed physical-demand evidence and a Federal Reserve that held rates steady. For long-term owners, those developments deserve attention together.

This roundup covers October to date. The October 30 snapshot is not a final month-end close.

The path matters. On October 9, gold remained about 0.9% above its September close, and silver was up 0.7%. By October 29, their daily closes showed losses of 3.3% and 13.6%, respectively. The October 30 snapshot captured further weakness.

That progression makes this a month-wide story, with losses accumulating before the latest session.

Which developments defined the month?

Three dated developments help explain the backdrop.

October 20: Physical gold demand looked mixed. The World Gold Council’s India update described improving festive and wedding demand around midmonth, with narrower local discounts. However, bar-and-coin buying had reportedly eased. The gold-industry group’s report covers India and gold around midmonth. It does not establish demand after the later selloff.

October 28: The Fed held rates. The Federal Reserve kept its target range at 3.75%–4.00%. Two policymakers preferred a quarter-point increase. October therefore brought no rate cut at that meeting, while the dissent showed that tighter policy remained under discussion.

October 29: Growth and inflation stayed in focus. BEA’s advance estimate put third-quarter real GDP growth at 3.4% annualized. Its separate September inflation report showed PCE prices rising 0.5% from August and 3.6% from a year earlier. These figures describe Q3 growth and September inflation, although both releases arrived in October.

Interest-bearing alternatives matter to metals that pay no income. That is the opportunity cost of holding gold. Still, these releases alone cannot establish how much of October’s decline each development caused.

What was different about silver’s experience?

Silver’s underperformance was already visible by midmonth. At the October 16 daily close, gold was roughly 0.2% above September 30. Silver was down 5.7%.

By the October 30 snapshot, silver’s percentage loss was nearly three times gold’s. The difference had developed across several weeks.

Silver’s industrial and monetary roles give it exposures that gold does not share in the same way. Manufacturing expectations can matter alongside investment demand. However, the price series does not identify which buyers sold or prove that factory demand caused the decline.

October demonstrated that gold and silver can deliver very different results within the same precious-metals allocation.

What does October mean for long-term physical owners?

First, price swings are a normal part of long-term physical ownership and can create opportunities to adjust an allocation. Pullbacks may offer a chance to add, while rallies may warrant rebalancing toward your target. Recovery times vary, so these decisions should reflect your goals and investment horizon. Holding bullion directly changes custody and issuer exposure; purchase premiums, storage and resale spreads also affect the economics of holding physical gold.

Second, inflation alone does not guarantee rising metal prices. October combined continuing inflation with a Fed hold and falling bullion prices. That combination matters when judging how metals fit alongside cash and bonds.

Third, the demand picture needs its dates and geography. Better seasonal jewelry demand in India can coexist with weaker reported investment buying. Neither observation establishes a global price floor.

For first-time buyers who hesitated at higher prices, October’s pullback may offer a more attractive entry point. Physical gold and silver can form part of a long-term, buy-and-hold allocation. A single month’s decline does not, by itself, invalidate that approach, but it can change the price at which new owners begin.

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
