Gold Steadies Near $4,000 as Oil Eases and the Fed’s Biggest Week Begins

Gold is holding just above $4,000 an ounce on Monday. That’s a partial comeback from last week’s slide to its lowest level since mid-July. Oil prices are pulling back today, and that’s taking some pressure off the metal. The relief comes right before Tuesday’s start to the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting. Silver isn’t holding up as well. It’s giving back an early morning gain and trailing gold into the decision, and that’s pushed the gold-silver ratio to its highest level in months.

Why Is Gold Holding Near $4,000 Today?

Gold is trading near $4,000 an ounce. That’s a recovery from the roughly $3,975 low it touched last week, gold’s worst level since mid-July. Today’s bounce is a partial recovery, not a reversal. The round number matters for a simple reason. A price level only becomes support once buyers have repeatedly stepped in around it. That’s exactly what’s happening at $4,000 right now, after last week’s test of that level.

Why Is Oil Pulling Gold Off Its Lows?

Oil has eased back from its recent highs. Traders are weighing diplomatic efforts to calm tensions in the Middle East, and that pullback is the clearest reason gold found support this morning. The mechanism runs through inflation expectations. A calmer oil market lowers the near-term inflation outlook. That eases pressure on real yields, which is the actual cost of holding a non-yielding asset like gold. When oil climbs, real yields tend to climb with it, and gold gets squeezed. When oil eases, that squeeze loosens. It’s the same channel that pushed gold down earlier this month, when oil firmed on rate-hike bets. An ounce of gold still buys roughly twice its historical share of a barrel of oil, even after this year’s correction. That’s worth remembering: today’s wobble is small next to the longer trend.

What’s at Stake for Gold at This Week’s Fed Meeting?

The Fed’s meeting runs Tuesday and Wednesday. TD Securities’ strategists call a hold “all but locked in,” barring a surprise. That would push the more consequential decision off until December. A fresh note from the same desk, published this morning, frames the test bluntly. Gold’s bullish case now has to prove itself at the $4,000 level this week, not just coast on it. The dollar is sitting softer, in the 101 to 102 range, as traders brace for the decision. That’s a modest tailwind, not a strong one. This is also an unusually crowded week for policy. The Bank of Canada and New Zealand’s central bank decide on the same day as the Fed. The European Central Bank follows on Thursday, and the Bank of Japan meets Friday. That adds more cross-currents than usual to this week’s price moves.

Why Is Silver Underperforming Gold Right Now?

The gold-silver ratio climbed to 74.33 on Monday, up from 74.12 on Friday. The mechanism is simple. Silver carries both a monetary role and an industrial one, which makes it the higher-beta metal in both directions. That amplification cuts the other way too. It’s the same dynamic behind gold cracking $4,100 and silver falling harder earlier this month, as oil pushed rate-hike bets higher. A rising ratio in a cautious, pre-Fed market just means silver is giving back more of its gains than gold on the same news. It isn’t a signal that silver’s industrial demand case has weakened.

Short-term Fed bets will move the price again tomorrow. The slower mechanism underneath doesn’t reset that often: the Fed raised its target range to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16, its first hike since 2023, and every meeting since has been a referendum on whether that holds. Gold and silver don’t simply “go up” against that backdrop. They measure how fast the currency is being diluted to service existing debt. A quiet Monday bounce off $4,000 is worth noting. It isn’t worth overreacting to.

Samantha is wonderful. I was nervous about spending a chunk of money. I asked her to `hold my hand’ and walk me through making my purchase.
She laughed and guided me through, step by step. She was so helpful in explaining everything...

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
