Gold and silver are both bouncing back from Friday’s sharp selloff, but silver is leading the rebound, up 3.31% near $50.76 against gold’s 1.69% gain near $3,940.81, as falling oil prices ease the inflation fears that have kept the Federal Reserve leaning toward a December rate hike.
What Happened to Gold and Silver Today?
Gold and silver are bouncing back hard. The rebound started early in U.S. trading on Monday, November 2, 2026. It follows a rough Friday for both metals.
Spot gold last traded near $3,940.81 per ounce. That is up 1.69% from its $3,875.53 open. Spot silver did even better; it traded near $50.76 per ounce, up 3.31% from its $49.13 open.
Friday was brutal. Gold fell about 3.5%. Silver cracked below $50 and dropped nearly 6%. Forced liquidation hit precious metals hard that day, and a tech-led stock selloff made it worse [Reuters]. Still, today’s bounce does not erase that damage. It does interrupt it, though, and the mechanism behind the interruption is worth understanding. Why Are Falling Oil Prices Lifting Gold and Silver?
The short answer is inflation math. Energy prices feed straight into the inflation outlook that drives Fed policy and crude oil is sliding hard this morning.
U.S. WTI crude dropped roughly 3%, toward $101 a barrel. Brent crude fell about 2.7%, to near $110 [Trading Economics]. The drop tracks new reports out of Washington. For instance, President Trump reportedly wants to give diplomacy more time before deciding whether to resume strikes on Iran. That decision is expected after Tuesday’s midterm elections. Meanwhile, Qatari and Iranian officials have also held talks for a third straight day, aiming to ease the standoff [Trading Economics].
Here is why that matters for bullion. Oil feeds directly into headline inflation. So, a lower oil price removes one argument for a tougher Fed. In other words, cheaper energy today lowers the case for tighter money tomorrow. As a result, gold and silver price that relief right away. They do not wait for an inflation report to confirm it.
Why Is Silver Outperforming Gold on the Rebound?
Silver’s bigger bounce is not a new story. In fact, it is the same beta that hurt silver owners on Friday, just running in reverse now. Silver carries an industrial-demand piece that gold does not. Because of that, it swings harder in both directions when risk appetite shifts.
Silver fell almost twice as fast as gold last week. Now it is recovering faster too, up 3.31% against gold’s 1.69%. If you own silver for the monetary thesis, expect this kind of swing. It is a structural feature of the metal, not a sign that the thesis has changed.
Is the Fed Still on Track to Hike Rates in December?
Today’s bounce does not change the policy backdrop, which is still unusually hawkish for gold. The Federal Reserve held its target rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday, October 28. Even so, two policymakers dissented in favor of an immediate hike [Federal Reserve].
Strong U.S. GDP growth, a 3.4% annualized pace in the third quarter, has kept the hawks engaged. So has core PCE inflation at 2.5% annualized in the same report, both released Thursday, October 29 [Bureau of Economic Analysis]. A December hike is squarely in play. The odds spiked above 85% right after Wednesday’s hold and have since settled back to roughly 70% as of today [CME FedWatch]. In short, a Fed that still leans toward raising rates, not cutting them, is the real headwind here. Today’s bounce has not escaped that headwind. Rather, it is rebounding against it.
What’s the Next Catalyst for Gold and Silver Prices?
Two events sit between here and real clarity. First, Tuesday’s midterm elections will shape expectations for fiscal policy. That, in turn, moves the dollar and real yields, and both move bullion.
The ISM manufacturing survey lands later today, ISM services data follows Wednesday, and the October jobs report closes out the week on Friday. Together, they give the Fed its clearest read yet on whether the economy can handle another hike. Until then, expect gold and silver to keep trading the oil tape as much as their own fundamentals. For now, if you are positioned for the sound money thesis, treat today’s bounce as a reprieve from a hawkish setup. It is not evidence that the setup has reversed.
