What ‘Inflation’ Actually Means: Is the Real Rate Already 10%?

Amidst the pitched arguments about inflation (though almost nobody argues at this point that it’s not, at the very least, on the way), it would be nice if we could agree on what that words specifically means. When we refer to ‘inflation’, we refer to the government’s definition. Which changed, substantively, a few years ago.

John Williams at ShadowStats fervently believes that the changes that the Labor Dept. made in the ’80s and ’90s seriously distorted the Consumer Price Index. Reverting to the pre-1980 methodology, he estimates that CPI inflation is running close to 10% today.

We could all argue less if we could trust and use the same data, but that’s not happening, either. I’ve been discussing this vexing problem in recent letters. It’s a multiplex challenge to define what data is relevant, to collect it accurately, and then to analyze it correctly. A weakness anywhere in that chain will compromise the whole effort.

Add, remove, or change the emphasis of a single input factor, and ‘inflation’ suddenly means something entirely different. Note, also, the wild inflation of the sectors where the government is intimately involved:

Why the Collapse of Bear Stearns Changed the Silver Market Forever

Very few people know exactly what was said, promised, discovered, obfuscated, threatened, etc. in the dark and high-tension days surrounding the collapse of Bear Stearns and its taxpayer-subsidized subsequent digestion by JPMorgan. What is irrefutable is that JPMorgan inherited Bear’s enormous and disastrous short silver position. How they would deal with it in response has fundamentally altered the silver market, while simultaneously setting it up for a historic rally. Bear Stearns’ failure coincided, to the day, with gold hitting all-time highs (over $1000) and silver hitting 30 year highs ($21). It’s easy to calculate that Bear lost more than $2

Central Banks Continue Buying Gold, Led by Uzbekistan and Poland

According to the World Gold Council, central banks added a net 22 tonnes of gold to their reserves in June, with Uzbekistan breaking a four-month selling streak by purchasing 9 tonnes. In Q2, global central bank gold buying totaled 166 tonnes, with Poland leading the way by adding 19 tonnes. However, Q2 purchases were down 33% from Q1 levels, reflecting a slight cooling of demand as gold prices have surged nearly 30% this year. Still, ING analysts expect continued buying ahead, driven by geopolitical uncertainty and the desire to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.

Gold Rally Hits Longest Streak Since February

Gold held its longest winning streak since February, climbing over 3% in just four sessions amid mounting concerns about the U.S. economy. Weak data on the services sector, labor market, and consumer spending are reinforcing fears of a slowdown, largely blamed on ongoing tariffs. This has fueled speculation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its September meeting—an outcome traders now see as a 90% probability. Lower rates tend to favor gold, which offers no yield but preserves purchasing power. Gold is up nearly 30% so far this year, as investors seek shelter from trade conflicts, geopolitical tensions,

Samantha is wonderful. I was nervous about spending a chunk of money. I asked her to `hold my hand’ and walk me through making my purchase.
She laughed and guided me through, step by step. She was so helpful in explaining everything...

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
