Peter Grandich: What Happens to Gold When Stocks Fall?

Last verified October 2026.

Peter Grandich, founder of The Grandich Letter, spoke with Megan King Diaz on The GoldSilver Show. He now sees a real chance of a sharp stock market drop. He does not call it certain. Still, he says the speed of that drop would decide what happens to gold. His full reasoning is in the interview below.

Key Takeaways:

  • Peter Grandich says a 10% to 30% stock drop within weeks or months is now a real possibility.
  • He says an overnight drop would hit gold too, while a slower one would help it.
  • Gold fell 12% in ten days of March 2020, during a rush for cash [Bank of England, February 9, 2022].
  • Customers owed $1.48 trillion on margin accounts at the end of September 2026 [FINRA, September 30, 2026].

What Is Peter Grandich Warning About?

Peter Grandich sees “a real good chance of a hard correction” in stocks. He puts the drop at 10% to 30% over weeks or months [Peter Grandich interview, October 13, 2026]. Until a week before the interview, he had refused to join the camp calling for one. He began in markets in 1984. Today, he says, many traders follow algorithm signals more than charts.

Two signals changed his mind. First, the large banks have lagged the market. Second, fewer stocks are lifting the S&P 500. By his account, most stocks outside a select few sit 10% to 30% below their highs.

In plain terms, this idea has a name. Market breadth measures how many stocks join a rally. Narrow breadth means a few names carry the index. Grandich says the S&P 500 set a record on days when new lows outnumbered new highs. He reads that as a sign of weakness.

A second market, he says, is already breaking down. The video explains what he means by that.

What Happens to Gold When Stocks Fall Overnight?

Yes, gold can fall alongside stocks in a sudden drop. When stocks fall fast, gold behaves differently from gold when stocks fall slowly. In an overnight drop, he says, “everything is for sale, including gold and silver” in the rush to raise cash. The reason is simple. Investors who borrow to buy stocks must post more money when prices fall. As a result, many sell whatever sells fastest.

The Bank of England described this pattern in a speech on February 9, 2022. Sir Jon Cunliffe, then its Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, called March 2020 a dash for cash. Investors sold their most liquid assets. Gold fell 12% from March 9 to March 18 [Bank of England, February 9, 2022].

Borrowing raises the stakes today. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) publishes monthly margin data. Its figures show customers owed $1.48 trillion on margin accounts at the end of September 2026. That sits just under June’s $1.50 trillion [FINRA, September 30, 2026].

Also, Grandich says the public has never owned more stock or borrowed more against it. Likewise, he adds that hedge funds now use leverage in Treasuries. In his view, that kind of excess often appears near market tops.

Speed matters more than size here. For example, a 30% fall over three months lets investors sort their assets. By contrast, a 30% fall over three days leaves no time to sort anything. Forced sellers then dump what finds a buyer, and that can include gold.

Why Could a Slower Drop Help Gold?

A slower drop could help gold because it avoids a forced scramble for cash. That is Grandich’s argument about gold when stocks fall slowly, not a forecast. Outside an overnight event, he calls the setup bullish for metals. He expects everyday investors to notice a bigger story. Meanwhile, demand for many metals, he says, now exceeds supply.

The Bank of England’s account shows why timing matters. In February 2020, investors first bought safe assets, and gold rose about 4%. Only later did the rush for cash take hold [Bank of England, February 9, 2022]. That sequence is our reading of the record, not a prediction.

Grandich also puts his own money behind the idea. He openly admits he is speaking to his own book. However, he is not buying everything yet. In some corners of the market, he is waiting for lower prices first. Which corners? You will need to watch the video to find out.

Three questions help sort out gold when stocks fall. How fast is the fall? How much borrowing sits behind it? And, how long do you plan to hold? A long horizon and no borrowing change the picture a great deal. A short horizon and heavy borrowing change it the other way.

This split points to a simple idea from the sound money case. Stocks bought on margin carry a lender’s claim. In contrast, physical gold carries no lender’s claim. That difference matters most when borrowing unwinds.

Gold traded near $4,140 an ounce on October 21, 2026 [goldsilver.com price charts, October 21, 2026]. For earlier swings, see how gold’s correction impacted portfolios. Our guide also asks whether you should sell gold during a bull market pullback.

What Does the Full Interview Hold Back?

Grandich covers far more than stocks and gold. He explains why he thinks passive index money could work in reverse. He also names the Treasury yield he says would strain most households. Next, he sets out his Fed call for December. Finally, he finishes a sentence about 2027.

However, none of those answers appear here. His own words carry more weight, and the numbers behind them live in the video. This is part two of a two-part conversation. Part one covers why Grandich sold gold in the rally and is now buying back.

What happens to gold when stocks fall?

Gold can rise or fall when stocks drop, and speed often decides which. In February 2020, gold rose about 4% as investors sought safety. Then it fell 12% from March 9 to 18 [Bank of England, February 9, 2022]. Grandich expects a similar split. An overnight drop would hit gold too, he says, but a slower one would help the metals.

What is a margin call, and why does it matter to gold?

A margin call is a demand for more cash when borrowed investments lose value. Investors who cannot pay must sell assets. They often sell what trades easily, and that can include gold. FINRA data show customers owed $1.48 trillion on margin accounts at the end of September 2026 [FINRA, September 30, 2026]. Therefore, more borrowing means more forced selling when prices fall quickly.

How does a slow stock decline differ from a fast one for gold?

A fast decline forces investors to raise cash at once. A slow decline gives them time to choose what to sell and what to buy. The Bank of England noted both phases in 2020. Gold first gained about 4%, then fell 12% during the cash scramble [Bank of England, February 9, 2022]. Grandich argues a slower fall would draw new buyers to metals.

Can gold lose value even when stocks are falling?

Yes. Gold pays no interest, and its price can drop when investors need cash. The 12% fall in March 2020 proves the point [Bank of England, February 9, 2022]. Position size therefore matters. Therefore, many owners keep gold as a modest share of their total assets. Gold also carries no lender’s claim, while margin-funded stocks do.

How can investors prepare for a sharp stock drop?

Start by checking how much borrowed money sits behind your investments. Next, keep enough cash on hand for bills so you never sell in a hurry. Then write down a plan before prices move. Grandich also shares his own advice on spending and preserving capital in the video. This is general education, not personal advice, because every situation differs.

What is market breadth, and why does it matter?

Market breadth measures how many stocks take part in a market move. Wide breadth means many stocks rise together. Narrow breadth means a few large names carry the index. Grandich says the S&P 500 hit a record while new lows outnumbered new highs. He reads that gap as a warning sign. However, breadth alone cannot time a drop.

What happens if stocks fall 30%?

Nobody can say for certain, because each drop has its own causes. Peter Grandich calls a fall of that size possible, not certain. History offers a guide to the mechanics. In 2020, a cash scramble pulled gold down 12% in ten days [Bank of England, February 9, 2022]. Central banks then stepped in, and order returned to markets.

The number? Over 200%. For context, that’s higher than the peaks seen during the dot-com bubble and the 2008 financial crisis.  Mike calls it
