Australian Gold Kangaroo: The Bullion Coin Backed by an Act of Parliament

Key Takeaways

  • The Australian Gold Kangaroo coin is struck by The Perth Mint at 99.99% purity. Its one-ounce size carries an AUD 100 legal tender face value and an unlimited mintage. [The Perth Mint]
  • Perth Mint bullion sits behind a statutory guarantee. Section 22 of the Gold Corporation Act 1987 commits the Treasurer of Western Australia, on behalf of the Crown, to what the Mint owes its customers. [The Perth Mint]
  • A one-ounce Kangaroo weighs 31.107 grams. An American Gold Eagle weighs 33.931 grams for the same ounce of gold, because roughly 2.8 grams of the Eagle is alloy rather than gold. [The Perth Mint; Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985]
  • The reverse design on the one-ounce and fractional coins changes annually. Notably, 2026 marks the series’ 40th year and carries a “40” privy mark. [The Perth Mint]
  • The coin clears the fineness pathway for U.S. retirement accounts. By contrast, the 22-karat Krugerrand does not. [Cornell Law School, Legal Information Institute]

Most guides to the Australian Gold Kangaroo coin open with the artwork. The reverse changes each year, so the story writes itself. That story, however, skips what matters most if you plan to hold the coin for a decade.

When you buy this coin, you are not simply buying a kangaroo stamped in metal. Instead, you are buying a claim that a state treasury has written into legislation. Consequently, the counterparty question, which serious buyers ask last and should ask first, has an unusually clear answer.

What is the Australian Gold Kangaroo coin?

The Australian Gold Kangaroo coin is a 99.99% pure gold bullion coin struck by The Perth Mint and issued as Australian legal tender. The Perth Mint launched the series in 1986 under the name Australian Gold Nugget, with reverse designs showing famous nuggets from the Australian gold rush. According to the Mint, the switch to kangaroo designs dates to 1989, and the change reached the bullion coins with the 1990-dated issues. Later, the series was rebranded to match. In 1991, the Mint added 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kilogram sizes. [The Perth Mint]

The Mint itself dates to 1899, when it opened as a branch of Britain’s Royal Mint to turn the output of the Kalgoorlie goldfields into coin. Ultimately, that founding purpose still describes the business. Specifically, the refinery processed 225.4 tonnes of gold in 2024-25, roughly 71% of Australia’s newly mined output. [The Perth Mint]

What are the specifications of a 1 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo?

The 2026 one-ounce issue holds 1.000 troy ounce of fine gold at 99.99% fineness, which is 24 karat. It weighs at least 31.107 grams gross, spans no more than 32.60 millimetres across, and runs under 2.95 millimetres thick. Australia recognises the coin as legal tender at AUD 100.00, and the Mint places no cap on the bullion mintage. Finally, the obverse carries the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III. [The Perth Mint]

Read those first two figures together. The coin holds one full troy ounce of gold, and it weighs 31.107 grams. In other words, gross weight and gold content converge. You are not carrying alloy around.

Why does the Gold Kangaroo design change every year?

The reverse on the one-ounce and fractional coins changes annually while the specifications hold constant, which gives collectors a reason to care without giving investors a reason to worry. The 2026 reverse, designed by Neil Hollis, shows two kangaroos leaping across water against a mountain backdrop, with a privy mark reading “40” for the series’ fortieth anniversary. Additionally, the reverse holds a micro-laser engraved letter as an authentication feature, visible only under magnification. [The Perth Mint]

That said, the annual change does not convert the coin into a collectible. The bullion issue carries unlimited mintage, so no year becomes artificially scarce by design.

Who guarantees Perth Mint gold?

The Government of Western Australia guarantees it, through legislation rather than through a corporate promise. Gold Corporation, a statutory body wholly owned by the state, trades under the Perth Mint name. Section 22 of the Gold Corporation Act 1987 provides that the cash equivalent of gold due, payable and deliverable by Gold Corporation is guaranteed by the Treasurer, in the name and on behalf of the Crown in right of the State. [The Perth Mint]

Consider what that changes in practice. Most bullion carries an implicit corporate counterparty: if the issuer fails, your recourse runs to a balance sheet. Here, by contrast, the recourse runs to a state treasury under an Act of Parliament. The Mint describes this as a level of government backing no other mint offers. That is the Mint’s own characterisation, yet the statute behind it is public, so you can check it rather than take it on faith.

That guarantee is testable, too. In March 2025 the London Bullion Market Association appointed Gold Corporation a Referee of its Good Delivery programme, expanding the panel from five to seven. Referees assay samples for monitoring and supply the reference samples other refiners are measured against. In short, the Mint does not merely meet the standard; it helps police it. [LBMA]

How does the Kangaroo compare to the Eagle, Maple Leaf and Krugerrand?

Fineness is where these coins genuinely diverge, and the difference shows up as weight in your hand.

The Kangaroo and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf both strike at 99.99%, so a one-ounce coin weighs about 31.1 grams. The American Gold Eagle and the South African Krugerrand both use a 22-karat alloy at 91.67% fineness. Each still contains a full ounce of fine gold, yet each weighs roughly 33.93 grams because alloy makes up the balance. The Eagle uses copper and silver. The Krugerrand uses copper alone, which gives it a reddish tone. [Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985]

Neither approach cheats you. The 22-karat coins deliver the ounce they promise, and the alloy makes them more scratch-resistant. Still, the 24-karat route keeps the accounting simpler: weight equals gold, with nothing further to compute.

Is the Australian Gold Kangaroo IRA eligible?

Yes. At 99.99% fineness, the coin clears the threshold that U.S. retirement accounts require.

The mechanism deserves a precise description, because it is widely misquoted. Section 408(m)(3)(B) of the Internal Revenue Code does not name a number. Rather, it exempts bullion from “collectible” treatment where the fineness equals or exceeds the minimum a contract market requires for delivery against a regulated futures contract, which for gold means 0.995. Separately, section 408(m)(3)(A)(i) carves out the American Gold Eagle by statute, notwithstanding its lower fineness. [Cornell Law School, Legal Information Institute]

The Krugerrand receives no such carve-out. Therefore, it remains a perfectly sound holding outside a retirement account and an ineligible one inside it.

Does unlimited mintage weaken the coin?

No, and the reasoning matters more than the answer. Unlimited mintage means the issue prices off metal, not off scarcity. Accordingly, you buy an ounce of gold and pay a fabrication premium, rather than a bet on how many other people were allowed to buy one.

Capped issues behave differently. Their premiums can expand on collector demand, and premiums that expand can also compress. For a saver holding a decade, that variable is noise. Our guide to numismatic versus bullion coins goes deeper.

What does the Kangaroo teach about sound money?

Ownership quality is a separate question from price. Gold traded near $4,602 per ounce on August 21, 2026. [goldsilver.com/price-charts/] Meanwhile, the arithmetic underneath that price barely moves year to year: money supply expands to service debt, cash savings earn below-inflation returns, and mine supply has grown at under 1% annually across the past decade.

The Kangaroo answers a narrower question than the price chart does. It asks what you hold, who stands behind it, and what happens if something goes wrong. A statutory guarantee, four-nines purity and an uncapped issue form a clear answer, worth understanding before you compare premiums rather than after.

People Also Ask

Is the Australian Gold Kangaroo the same as the Australian Gold Nugget?

Effectively yes. The Mint launched the series as the Gold Nugget in 1986, then rebranded it around the kangaroo imagery introduced at the end of the 1980s. [The Perth Mint]

What sizes does the Gold Kangaroo come in?

The 2026 gold series runs 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, alongside a 1 kilogram coin. The Mint added 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kilo sizes back in 1991, yet only the kilo remains in the current bullion lineup. [The Perth Mint]

What is the largest Gold Kangaroo ever made?

The Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, cast in 2011. It holds 1,012 kilograms of 99.99% gold, measures about 80 centimetres across and 12 centimetres deep, and carries an AUD 1,000,000 face value. Guinness World Records recognised it as the largest coin in 2012, and it remains on display at the Mint. [The Perth Mint]

Does the Gold Kangaroo carry a face value?

Yes, at AUD 100 in Australia. However, that denomination sits far below the metal value and functions as a legal marker rather than a price. [The Perth Mint]
