Gold Falls 3% as Hormuz Standoff Lifts Fed Hike Odds to 66%

Last verified: September 28, 2026

Iran didn’t get its ceasefire this weekend. It offered one anyway. Gold, the asset that’s supposed to rise when war risk does, fell instead.

Gold is trading near $4,150 an ounce today. That’s down about 3.2% from Friday’s close near $4,285. It’s the sharpest single-session drop in weeks. Silver fell even harder. It’s down roughly 4.7% to about $61.29, pushing the gold-silver ratio out to about 67.7-to-1.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gold fell about 3.2% to roughly $4,150/oz and silver fell about 4.7% to roughly $61.29/oz Monday, after President Trump rejected Iran’s weekend proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
  • Money markets now price a 65.9% chance of another Fed rate hike at the October 27-28 meeting, up from 57.6% a week ago and just 9.4% a month ago.
  • This is an active hiking cycle, not a delayed rate cut. The Fed already raised its target range to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, its first hike since 2023.
  • Silver’s steeper drop is a beta signature of the same dollar/yields move, not a distinct silver-specific catalyst.
Line chart comparing gold and silver's indexed price move from September 22 to September 28, 2026, showing gold down 4.8% and silver down 8.6% cumulatively, with silver falling faster on every day of the window.

Why Did Gold Fall Today?

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi floated an offer Friday at the UN General Assembly. Reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, he said, if Washington ended its naval blockade, lifted sanctions on Iranian oil, and released frozen funds. Trump turned it down over the weekend, telling reporters, “They made a proposal but I rejected it,” according to CNBC. He also signaled to aides that U.S. strikes may resume after November’s midterms, per the Wall Street Journal. Still, Trump told Axios he expects talks to resume this week, so diplomacy isn’t fully shut. Brent crude reversed hard on the rejection. It rose more than 3% toward $107 a barrel Monday, per Al Jazeera and CNBC, after easing on Friday’s initial hopes. Roughly a fifth of global oil supply still routes through the strait.

What’s the Real Mechanism Behind the Selloff?

The mechanism runs through the Fed, not through fear. Oil near $107 a barrel adds directly to headline inflation. That’s exactly what hawkish policymakers are citing to justify more tightening. Money markets now price a 65.9% chance of another hike on October 27-28, up from 57.6% a week ago and 9.4% a month ago. On top of that, the Fed already hiked on September 16, its first increase since 2023, to a 3.75%-4.00% target range with a median 2026 projection of 4.1%. Every added basis point of expected tightening raises the real return on cash and short paper. Gold pays no yield at all, so it becomes directly less competitive as an asset to hold.

Strategists at OCBC framed the backdrop bluntly this week. Resilient US economic data, elevated energy prices, and persistent inflation concerns are driving Treasury yields higher, they said, underpinning the dollar while weighing on rate-sensitive assets like gold. Two Fed officials added their own hawkish notes. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack warned against letting the public “accept elevated prices as the new normal.” Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson said “modest additional tightening may be necessary.”

What’s the Deeper Story for Gold and Silver?

A held-rate environment lets gold coast on the inflation story alone. An actively-hiking Fed adds a second, competing headwind at the same time, as we’ve written about before. Gold’s structural case doesn’t depend on the Fed’s next move. It’s finite, carries no counterparty, and sits outside the currency system the Fed defends. But its near-term price does depend on that move, and right now the move is up, not down.

The deeper story isn’t that gold fell on rising war risk. It rarely is. Gold is losing a direct, quantifiable competition with a risk-free return. That’s on top of an inflation narrative it usually wins outright. Silver’s outsized drop is the tell. When a move is really about the dollar and the discount rate, the higher-beta, more industrially exposed metal typically falls further and faster. That’s exactly what happened Monday: a macro-liquidity signature, not a silver-specific story.

For anyone who already owns physical metal, a session like this isn’t a reason to move it. For anyone still deciding whether to start, the more useful question isn’t whether gold rises this week. It’s what waiting for a top costs while a hiking Fed does the work the metal itself was never built to need.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

The next test lands with the September PCE print and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report. Both land ahead of the October 27-28 FOMC meeting. A hot inflation read or a resilient jobs number would likely push hike odds higher still. A soft print would be the first real chance for those odds, and gold, to reverse. Watch whether Brent holds above $100. As long as the Hormuz standoff keeps oil elevated, the inflation-to-rate-hike pipeline pressuring gold stays open.
