Gold Tops $4,124 as Falling Yields Set Up a Friday Test

Gold traded near $4,124.53 an ounce on Thursday. That is up about 1.6% from the day’s open. Silver changed hands near $52.55, up roughly 0.5%. You can track both metals against their own recent history on GoldSilver’s live price charts. Both metals are building on Tuesday’s rally, which followed a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections. The bigger story Thursday is not the election anymore. It is what has happened to Treasury yields and the dollar since.

Why Are Gold and Silver Rising Today?

Gold and silver are rising today because a mechanism from Tuesday is still running, even though it has not been a straight line. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell from 5.05% on October 28 to 4.91% by November 2, according to Federal Reserve data. It then rose back to 4.95% on November 3, per the Treasury’s own daily par-yield curve, before easing again to roughly 4.92% on November 4. Net, the yield is still lower than where it started the week. The move just has not been clean.

That combination matters because gold earns no interest. When Treasury yields fall, the cost of holding gold instead of a bond falls too. Gold becomes more attractive by comparison. Gold’s demand is almost entirely monetary rather than industrial. That is exactly why it reacts to yields or the dollar more directly than an industrial metal would. A quarter-point move in real yields has historically moved gold by $40 to $60 an ounce, so even a choppy few basis points of net decline is a real, if modest, part of this week’s gain.

What Is Driving Treasury Yields Lower?

Treasury yields are falling because markets see a higher chance of a December Fed rate cut. That bet strengthened once the election removed one source of near-term policy uncertainty. The real 10-year yield strips out inflation expectations. It eased from 2.67% to 2.60% before ticking back up slightly to 2.62%. Inflation expectations, measured by the 10-year breakeven rate, have stayed roughly flat near 2.3%. That tells a clean story: this is a rate-expectations move, not an inflation scare.

Thursday’s own calendar adds a quieter layer. The Commerce Department released third-quarter unit labor costs. The Labor Department reported weekly jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET. Neither release carries the weight of a jobs report on its own. That is exactly why markets are treating today as a preview, not the main event.

Why Is Silver Keeping Pace With Gold?

Silver is keeping pace with gold because the same rate and dollar mechanism is working through a metal that also has industrial demand on its side. Silver remains below where it traded in late October, when it closed above $54 on October 27, extending a rebound from where it stood when it first broke below $50 in late October. The gold-to-silver ratio sits near 78.5 today. That is only a modest move from the high-70s range the ratio has held since October 30. Today’s action looks like both metals moving together, not silver making an independent leap.

What Happens Friday?

Friday brings the October nonfarm payrolls report. It is the data point every trader covering this rally is waiting on. A weak print would reinforce the case for a December rate cut and could extend the move in gold and silver. A stronger-than-expected report would cut against that case, pushing yields back up. It would test whether this week’s gains hold. Either way, Friday’s number is the first real test of whether this move reflects a durable shift in Fed expectations or a shorter-lived reaction to the election itself.

For long-term owners, the distinction that matters is between the catalyst and the mechanism. The election was the trigger. Falling real yields and a softer dollar are the mechanism actually moving prices, even when the path is bumpy session to session. That mechanism will keep operating on Friday, no matter which political story leads the headlines by then.

Treasury Borrowing Forecast: $618 Billion, $24 Billion Catch

A $125 billion Treasury refunding is not $125 billion in new borrowing. The November 4 plan replaces about $97 billion of maturing debt, while the separate quarter-wide forecast calls for $618 billion in net borrowing. The starting cash balance explains the apparent contradiction.

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
