How 3.7% Inflation Impacts Wealth Preservation

U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% over the year ending September 2026. Yet gasoline prices rose 34.2%, while food prices increased 2.5%. Those differences help explain why the headline inflation rate may not match a household’s own experience. For long-term savers, preserving purchasing power matters more than reacting to every market headline.

A household with a long daily commute may feel inflation differently from someone who works at home. Similarly, a family with large medical bills may face pressures that another family barely notices.

Both households, however, see the same national inflation headline. Understanding the nuances in the data supports long-term planning.

Why Doesn’t 3.7% Inflation Feel the Same for Everyone?

On October 14, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 3.7% over the 12 months ending September 2026, up from 3.4% in August. On a seasonally adjusted basis, prices rose 0.6% in September.

CPI-U tracks the average change in prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services. It does not measure the exact expenses of every household. Spending patterns and experienced price changes differ.

For example, someone who drives extensively may devote a greater share of income to gasoline than the average household. Another family may be more affected by rent, healthcare or groceries. Consequently, an individual’s cost of living can rise faster—or slower—than the published CPI average.

Which Everyday Expenses Rose the Most?

The September 2026 CPI report illustrates how widely price changes can diverge. Over the preceding 12 months, selected categories changed as follows:

  • Gasoline: +34.2%
  • Airline fares: +22.4%
  • Hospital services: +5.6%
  • Shelter: +3.2%
  • Food: +2.5%

These categories do not carry equal weights in CPI. Shelter represents a much larger share of the index than gasoline. Therefore, a steep rise in gasoline prices does not translate into an identical increase in the headline rate.

But for a household with unusually high fuel expenses, the strain may be substantial. Your personal inflation experience depends partly on what you buy and how much of your budget goes toward each category.

What Does Rising Inflation Mean for Your Savings?

Higher prices reduce the purchasing power of each dollar. Whether a person’s total savings keep pace depends on the returns earned, taxes, costs and the inflation that person experiences.

Consider a hypothetical household spending $50,000 a year. If the prices of everything it bought rose uniformly by 3.7%, the same purchases would cost $51,850 the following year—an additional $1,850. (This is an illustration, not a prediction of anyone’s future expenses.)

Income growth and interest on savings may offset some increases. Nevertheless, a growing bank balance does not necessarily imply greater purchasing power. Long-term planning should therefore consider what savings can purchase, not merely their nominal dollar value.

How Can Physical Gold Fit Into a Long-Term Plan?

Physical gold has characteristics that distinguish it from ordinary currency holdings. Its supply cannot be expanded by a central bank, and outright ownership of bullion does not depend on an issuer promising repayment. The World Gold Council identifies diversification and liquidity among gold’s potential portfolio benefits.

Still, gold is not guaranteed to beat inflation, and its price can fall even while living costs rise. Bullion also carries purchase premiums, selling spreads, and potentially storage and insurance charges. Plus, unlike an interest-bearing account, physical gold generates no regular income.

For a deeper comparison, see how gold and savings accounts serve different financial purposes, particularly when balancing long-term purchasing power against the need for accessible cash.

Ownership arrangements deserve attention, too. Under an allocated bullion account, a customer owns identified bars held in custody. By contrast, an unallocated account generally gives the customer a contractual claim against the provider rather than ownership of specific bars. That changes counterparty exposure.

For anyone considering professional vaulting, understanding the differences between allocated, segregated, and pooled gold storage can help clarify the practical ownership and custody considerations.

What Should Long-Term Savers Take Away?

September’s 3.7% CPI reading summarizes a broad urban-consumer basket; it cannot tell each household exactly how its costs changed. Nor does a single inflation release determine whether anyone should buy or sell gold.

Instead, review expenses, maintain liquidity and diversify according to personal goals and risk tolerance. Physical gold may play a role, but it is one component of a wider plan—not a guaranteed solution.

The bottom line: Inflation statistics are averages. Wealth preservation is personal. Start with the costs and financial needs that actually matter to you.

Samantha is wonderful. I was nervous about spending a chunk of money. I asked her to `hold my hand’ and walk me through making my purchase.
She laughed and guided me through, step by step. She was so helpful in explaining everything...

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
