Chinese President Xi Jinping kicked off a diplomatic visit to Southeast Asia on Monday, using the opportunity to position China as a stabilizing global force in contrast to the United States under President Donald Trump.
In an editorial published in both Vietnamese and Chinese official media, Xi emphasized that “there are no winners in a trade war, or a tariff war,” and called for both countries to protect multilateral trading systems and maintain stable global supply chains.
The visit comes as Trump maintains significant 145% tariffs on China despite pausing some other duties. According to Nguyen Khac Giang, a visiting fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, Xi’s visit allows China to present itself as a “responsible superpower” in contrast to Trump’s approach.
Xi received an honorary tarmac greeting from Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong, with performances by drum art students and flag-waving ceremonies featuring Chinese and Communist Party flags.
