Why This Week’s Data Beat Still Matters for Gold Prices

As of 8:45 a.m. ET, October 27, 2026 — Gold $4,021.14/oz · Silver $53.61/oz

Durable goods orders for September landed at 8:30 a.m. ET today. They rose 1.8%, modestly ahead of the 1.6%-2.0% range most forecasters had pencilled in. Still, it barely registered. Gold held near $4,021 an ounce, silver traded near $53.61, and every headline stayed fixed on tomorrow’s Federal Reserve decision.

Key Takeaways

  • Durable goods orders rose 1.8% in September, modestly ahead of the 1.6%-2.0% range most forecasters tracked (one outlier estimate had put consensus at just 0.6%).
  • The beat was driven mostly by transportation orders, up 4.6%; the core capital-goods measure rose a modest 0.5%, roughly in line with expectations, not a broad acceleration.
  • Gold and silver barely moved on the print. Every headline stayed fixed on Wednesday’s Fed decision instead, where December rate-cut odds near 82% — not today’s data — are driving the dollar and gold.
Two-panel chart: bar chart showing September durable goods orders at 1.8%, within the 1.6%-2.0% consensus range, versus August’s 0.1% and a 0.6% outlier estimate; line chart showing gold’s price today near $4,021 against the $3,975 three-month low.

What Did Durable Goods Orders Actually Show?

New orders for manufactured durable goods rose 1.8% to $345.4 billion in September, the Census Bureau reported this morning. That follows a revised 0.1% increase in August. Pre-release forecasts varied by source and clustered between 1.6% and 2.0%. So the print was a modest beat, not the dramatic surprise one widely-cited 0.6% estimate would suggest. Strip out the volatile transportation category, and orders rose just 0.5%. That is roughly in line with what trackers expected for that narrower measure. Exclude defense spending instead, and orders rose 2.2%.

These numbers track business investment, but this month’s headline is not the broad-based story it first appears. Transportation equipment did most of the heavy lifting, climbing 4.6% to $119.8 billion. Core capital goods orders, the measure economists watch most closely for underlying demand, rose only that modest 0.5%. The aircraft-driven headline is a real data point. It is not confirmation of a broad acceleration in industrial activity.

Why Didn’t Gold React to the News?

Gold slipped modestly through the morning. It traded near $4,021 after touching an intraday low of $3,975.23 on Friday, its weakest level in three months. The dollar, meanwhile, held close to a two-week high. But that move has little to do with durable goods. Instead, it has everything to do with the Federal Reserve, whose two-day policy meeting opened this morning.

The Fed’s decision lands Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET. Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference follows right after. September’s PCE report, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, lands Thursday. Traders are pricing roughly 82% odds of a December move, up from about 75% on Monday. They see only about 10% odds of any action this week, according to Reuters and CME FedWatch data. In other words, that repricing, not this morning’s data, is what is keeping the dollar firm and gold capped.

Why Should a Buried Data Point Still Matter to Gold Owners?

Here is the mechanism connecting the two stories. Durable goods orders are a real-economy signal, independent of anything the Fed says on Wednesday. A modest headline beat, driven mostly by transportation orders, still left the core measure barely positive. That held true even with borrowing costs elevated. Quiet resilience like that, not a dramatic acceleration, gives a central bank room to stay patient instead of rushing toward cuts. A patient Fed, in turn, is itself a dollar-supportive signal.

Gold trades inversely to real yields. When the expected after-inflation return on holding dollars rises, so does the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion. This morning’s print does not change the Fed’s actual vote this week. However, it reinforces the case for a patient Fed through December. That makes it one more input pointing the same direction as this week’s hike-odds repricing: a quiet, reinforcing story that got no airtime.

What Happens Next for Gold and Silver?

Wednesday’s decision is widely expected to hold rates steady. The real signal, instead, sits inside Warsh’s press conference. Watch how he frames resilient data like this morning’s print against the Fed’s inflation mandate. Thursday’s PCE print will be the next test of whether sticky data and a patient Fed becomes the dominant narrative into December.

For long-term owners, this week’s price noise matters less than the mechanism underneath it. Gold’s multi-year case rests on sustained government deficits, central bank buying, and currency debasement. None of that turns on a single week’s rate odds. A quiet data print buried under Fed-week noise is a reminder: this week’s volatility is about positioning, not about a change in those underlying forces. Read how the Fed’s decisions move gold and silver prices for the full mechanism behind Wednesday’s vote.

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
