Investors Turn to Treasuries as AI Stocks Slide

AI stocks are under pressure, and investors are reconsidering where to seek safety. U.S. Treasury bonds rallied as technology shares weakened. Meanwhile, gold’s response has been more complicated.

The shift raises an important question: What makes government bonds and physical gold different when stock market confidence falters?

Key Takeaways:

  • AI-related selling helped revive demand for Treasury bonds as investors questioned technology valuations.
  • Falling yields can support gold, but gold and bonds do not always move together.
  • Physical bullion and Treasury securities carry different risks, even when both attract defensive interest.

Why Are Investors Selling AI Stocks?

Investors are questioning whether massive AI spending can deliver the earnings needed to justify elevated valuations.

The concerns extend beyond software companies. Chipmakers, data-center operators, and heavily financed AI businesses have also faced pressure.

MarketWatch reported on October 15 that investors had shifted toward Treasury bonds and defensive stocks. According to its coverage, 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields fell roughly 10 basis points on Thursday.

That was notable because inflation concerns remained elevated. Normally, stronger inflation can push yields higher.

However, fears about future growth can produce the opposite response. Investors may accept lower yields in exchange for government securities.

Why Did Treasury Bonds Rally?

Treasury prices and yields generally move in opposite directions.

When demand for existing fixed-rate bonds rises, their prices increase. Their yields then fall because the bonds’ payments remain fixed.

This makes Treasury securities attractive to investors seeking contractual payments and government-backed repayment at maturity. However, Treasuries are not risk-free in market-price terms. Longer-duration bonds can lose significant value when yields rise.

GoldSilver recently examined the opposite situation, when rising Treasury yields tightened financial conditions.

The latest bond rally highlights how quickly growth concerns can change that relationship.

How Is Gold Responding to the AI Selloff?

Gold has attracted attention alongside the bond-market reversal, although its movement has not been uniform.

According to GoldSilver’s market data, spot gold stood at $4,166.44 per ounce at 9:00 a.m. ET on October 16, down 0.11% from the previous closing reference.

Meanwhile, silver traded at $57.64 per ounce, up 0.38% against its corresponding reference. (These figures provide a snapshot of precious-metals prices, rather than official daily closing prices.)

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 16 that softer yields and a weaker dollar were supporting gold futures. (These observations use different instruments and timestamps. Therefore, they should not be treated as identical price measures.)

Lower Treasury yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold. After all, physical bullion pays no interest. However, the dollar, inflation expectations, and investor liquidity needs also influence gold.

What Makes Physical Gold Different From Treasury Bonds?

Treasury securities represent financial obligations of the U.S. government. They offer contractual payments, but their market prices respond to interest-rate changes.

Physical gold works differently.

Bullion has no issuer promising repayment. Its value depends on the metal itself and demand in the global market.

That distinction also creates practical considerations. Physical ownership involves custody, storage, insurance, and transaction costs.

Neither asset guarantees protection from losses. Instead, each exposes its owner to a different set of risks.

GoldSilver has previously explained why gold can move differently from Treasury yields.

What Should Gold Owners Watch Next?

First, watch whether Treasury yields continue falling as investors reassess AI-related growth expectations.

Second, follow the dollar and real yields. Both can influence gold’s relative appeal.

Finally, distinguish temporary demand for safety from a lasting change in market conditions.

The AI selloff has reopened an important debate about financial risk. Yet it does not establish that every defensive asset will rise together.

For physical gold owners, the more useful question is which risks bullion can diversify and which risks remain.

Samantha is wonderful. I was nervous about spending a chunk of money. I asked her to `hold my hand’ and walk me through making my purchase.
She laughed and guided me through, step by step. She was so helpful in explaining everything...

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
