Gold Falls as Oil Pushes Fed Rate-Hike Bets Higher

Gold fell to $4,059.78 an ounce this morning. That is down nearly 2% from today’s open. Silver fell harder. It dropped almost 5% to $55.11. Neither move came from a new Fed statement. The Fed is in its quiet period before its next meeting. That meeting lands October 27 and 28. So what moved the price? Oil did. Understanding that chain tells a long-term owner how much today’s print should actually matter, and how much of it is simply noise.

Why Did Gold Fall Below $4,100 Today?

Oil stayed high this week. The cause is renewed worry about supply risk tied to Saudi Arabia. It is part of the same Gulf-shipping risk that has hit the region on and off since September. Higher oil raises inflation worries; higher inflation worries raise the odds of a Fed rate hike, or of rates staying high for longer. That raises the cost of holding gold, because gold pays no yield. So gold sold off, even though nothing changed about the debt or the dollar story behind its multi-year run. This is a rates story. It is simply wearing a geopolitical trigger today.

The CME FedWatch Tool puts the October hike probability near 16%. For December, it puts the odds close to 90%. Oil’s own climb this year has already been reshaping what one ounce of gold buys in oil terms, a trend today’s move extends rather than reverses.

Why Is Silver Falling Faster Than Gold?

The gold-to-silver ratio jumped from about 71 yesterday to roughly 74 today. That means it takes nearly 74 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. Silver always swings harder than gold, in both directions. This isn’t new: silver has fallen faster than gold before, and the mechanics are the same every time. Its market is smaller. Also, more of its demand comes from factories and industry, and industrial buyers get nervous about growth faster than gold buyers do. So when a rate-driven selloff hits, silver takes the bigger percentage hit. That is simply how silver behaves; it is not a sign that something broke.

What Changes at Next Week’s Fed Meeting?

Very little changes in the long run. The October 27-28 meeting will confirm or walk back this week’s rate-hike bets. Either way, the metals will likely move again. But one meeting cannot undo a federal deficit. It cannot undo a decade of currency debasement. It cannot undo the central-bank gold buying that has continued through every rate cycle this year. The meeting is a short-term event for paper markets. It is not a vote on why people own physical metal in the first place.

What Should a Long-Term Owner Take From This?

If you already own gold and silver as a multi-year holding, today’s drop is noise dressed up as news. The chain is simple and clear. Oil rises. Inflation worries rise. Rate-hike odds rise. Non-yielding assets fall. None of those steps touches the real reasons you bought metal: currency debasement, growing deficits, and less exposure to counterparty risk. A trader watches the next tick. A long-term owner has one job today instead.

Confirm nothing about your core thesis changed. That is the same advice that applied the last time a hot data print knocked both metals down: don’t chase the print either way. Then stop watching the screen until the Fed actually speaks next week. The mechanism moved the price. The reasons you own metal did not move at all.

Samantha is wonderful. I was nervous about spending a chunk of money. I asked her to `hold my hand’ and walk me through making my purchase.
She laughed and guided me through, step by step. She was so helpful in explaining everything...

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
