Gold ETF Holdings Rose in October. Why Did Fund Assets Fall 6%?

Last verified November 2026.

Gold ETF holdings reached a month-end record of 4,275 tonnes in October, according to the World Gold Council’s November 5, 2026, report. Yet fund assets fell 6% to $542 billion despite estimated inflows of $2.7 billion. The gold-industry group says a lower gold price outweighed new money, so more metal did not mean more value in dollars.

Key Takeaways

  • The World Gold Council’s November 5 report puts October fund-held gold at a month-end record of 4,275 tonnes, up 19 tonnes. Yet dollar fund assets fell 6% to $542 billion.
  • October’s $2.7 billion of estimated fund inflows did not prevent a fall in total dollar value. Tonnes, money flows and valuation are different measures.
  • Europe and Asia had fund inflows in October; North America had outflows. These fund totals do not count bars bought directly or prove that gold has hit a price floor.

Why did gold ETF holdings rise while their dollar value fell?

Start with the unit. Tonnes tell you how much gold the tracked funds hold. Net flows count the money that entered or left those funds over the month. Assets under management, or AUM, put a dollar value on fund assets. Each measure answers a separate question.

The council says its tracked holdings gained 19 tonnes in October. Yet gold’s lower price outweighed the inflows when the funds’ assets were valued in dollars. So the funds ended the month with more metal but less dollar value. The report names that mechanism; its headline totals do not show the exact dollar effect of each factor.

Our November 5 gold and silver outlook already noted the 19-tonne gain. October’s fresh lesson is the other side of that ledger: a record weight of gold did not bring a record dollar value. Neither figure is wrong. One counts inventory; the other tells you its value at the month’s end.

The council’s data cover gold ETFs and similar funds, including some other open-ended products. It says most of the funds it tracks are fully backed by physical gold. Its report does not cover all gold buyers, nor does it count bars bought directly by households.

Did gold funds everywhere attract new money?

No. The council’s November 5 report estimates $1.8 billion of October inflows into European funds and $1.3 billion into Asian funds. North American funds lost $512 million, while other regions gained $62 million. The council rounds each region on its own. That is why the figures need not sum exactly to its rounded $2.7 billion global total.

The global inflow may sound like a vote by every gold buyer. North America’s outflow tells a different story. The first-half regional comparison we covered on September 2 spans an earlier period, not more October flows. Nor do October fund totals reveal why any one person bought or sold. The council offers possible reasons, but the totals cannot show individual motives.

Why do ounces held and dollar value tell different stories?

An ETF share gives you fund exposure and can trade on an exchange. A bar held directly gives you a different kind of control. But you may pay to store and insure it, and its dollar price can fall too. Neither form of ownership turns October’s fund inflows into a promise of future purchasing power.

A physical owner also sees two numbers: ounces held and their current dollar value. The first may stay fixed while the second falls. If that happens, you have not lost ounces, but the metal may buy less of what you need. October’s fund report makes the gap plain. It cannot tell you how either measure will look next month.

Travis was amazing! I was having difficulty with a wire transfer of my life’s savings, and I was very worried that I might not be able to receive it all. My husband just passed away and I’ve been worried about these funds along with grieving for 8 months. As soon as I got connected with Travis, my concerns were immediately addressed and he put me at ease. The issue was resolved within days. He even called me back with updates to keep me in the loop about what was going on with the funds. I am so grateful for a customer representative like Travis. He really cares for his clients.

Sam was also very helpful! I called and was connected to Sam within 30 seconds. She helped me with a fee that was charged to my account. She had a great attitude and took care of the fee quickly.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
