China Gold Imports via Hong Kong: Up Over 28%, Demand Mixed

China gold imports via Hong Kong rose more than 28% from August, on a net basis, to a five-month high in September. The World Gold Council’s October 15, 2026 report found a different signal: wholesale withdrawals rose from August but remained below September 2025. Gold can enter a market before a shop sells it.

Key takeaways

  • Reuters’ October 29 report puts September net imports via Hong Kong more than 28% above August. That is a five-month high for one route.
  • In its October 15, 2026 China report, the World Gold Council counted 92 tonnes withdrawn from the Shanghai Gold Exchange. That was up 48% from August but down 22% from a year earlier.
  • Restocking can precede a sale. Neither measure proves that households or China’s central bank bought the gold arriving through Hong Kong.

What do China gold imports via Hong Kong measure?

Net imports are gold entering mainland China through Hong Kong, minus flows going back. Think of this as one door into a larger market. The number is not China’s total gold intake. It does not count retail sales, either. Gold crossing a border may still sit in a dealer’s stockroom. A route can thus hit a five-month high before shops sell more metal.

Reuters linked the rise partly to restocking ahead of Golden Week. It also cited extra investor demand. Both explanations matter. Yet the report does not measure each group’s share of the incoming gold. Businesses can bring in stock before a holiday without selling it all that month. Nor can we assume that every new bar went to a household.

We covered China’s broader import picture on September 22. That story looked at a January-to-August total, not September’s net flow through Hong Kong. It cannot verify this month’s count or name its final buyers.

Why did wholesale gold demand give a mixed signal?

The World Gold Council’s October 15, 2026 report covers a different step in the market. Banks, jewelers and other traders took 92 tonnes from the Shanghai Gold Exchange in September. That was 48% more than in August but 22% less than in September 2025. The Council links the monthly rise to seasonal restocking. It also points to weak jewelry demand compared with prior years. The Council represents the gold industry, so its view deserves clear attribution.

Exchange withdrawals track gold leaving a wholesale marketplace. Hong Kong net imports track gold moving through one trade route. They are not the same flow or even the same type of count. Both rose against August. Yet the wholesale measure still trailed last September. You cannot place 92 tonnes beside the import percentage as if they were slices of one pie. That would turn two useful clues into a false comparison.

What does the import rise mean for a long-term gold owner?

For someone holding physical gold, this report adds context about one source of supply. It does not establish a price floor or guarantee future purchasing power. Stronger route inflows may reflect stock building and investor interest. But the weak yearly wholesale reading challenges the idea of a broad demand boom. Some buyers may want bullion while jewelry sales lag. The data do not say who took delivery from the Hong Kong route.

Official gold reserves are a separate question. Our guide to how central-bank gold buying works provides background on reserve purchases. This trade report describes a route’s net flow, not who ultimately bought the bars.

Further months of route data could test whether the rise lasts after the holiday. Later SGE withdrawals could separately show whether wholesale offtake remains strong. Neither series establishes retail sales, identifies ultimate buyers or links a particular imported bar to a withdrawal. For now, an import surge and soft yearly wholesale demand can both be true. Gold can arrive before it sells.

Outstanding quality and customer service. I first discovered Mike Maloney through his “Secrets of Money” video series. It was an excellent precious metals education. I was a financial advisor and it really helped me learn more about wealth protection. I used this knowledge to help protect my clients retirements. I purchase my precious metals through goldsilver.com. It is easy, fast and convenient. I also invested my IRA’s and utilize their excellent storage options. Bottom line, Mike and his team have earned my trust. I continue to invest in wealth protection and my own education. I give back and help others see the opportunities to invest in precious metals. Thank you.
