History of the Silver Maple Leaf
The Silver Maple Leaf (along with the American Silver Eagle) is one of the two most-recognized silver coins in the world. It was first introduced in 1988. Mintages have varied from a low of 101,000 ounces in 1997 to a high of 28.2 million in 2013.
In 1999, some silver Maple Leaf coins were issued with a privy mark to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the RCM Maple Leaf Program. In the following year, the coins featured a privy mark with fireworks and the number 2000. Another Silver Maple Leaf version was issued to commemorate the millennium. The coins were double-dated 1999 and 2000.
Coins with fireworks had relatively small mint runs and are ranked as having modest collectible value.
Composition and Character
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is a full troy ounce and is .9999 fine. The purity is attested to by the words “Fine Silver” and its French translation “Argent Pur.” The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, and has gone through three iterations. The portrait on the original Maple Leaf was used from 1988-1989; the second portrait—of the queen in her 64th year—from 1990-2003; and the third portrait from June 2003—which features a crownless queen the year after her Golden Jubilee—to the present.
The reverse displays a large maple leaf, which is the symbol of the country, a design that has remained unchanged. However, beginning in 2014, a mintmark was introduced as a security measure. It is a small maple leaf, micro-engraved into the reverse. The mintmark contains the coin's year of issue and represents a major enhancement of bullion coin security.
The design features radial lines emanating from the center of the coin, machined precisely within microns to ensure consistent die production and coin striking. The specific width and pitch of the lines create a light diffraction pattern, which makes the silver Maple Leaf unique among bullion products.
When you buy, you may specify coins with or without the mintmark.
