History of the Maple Leaf Coin

First minted in 1979, Gold Maple Leafs are among the most popular and recognizable gold coins in the world. At their inception, the only other bullion coin was the South African Krugerrand. However, this coin which was not widely available because of boycotts on apartheid-era South African goods. From their beginning, Maple Leafs have been—and remain—wildly popular. By the early ‘80s, they were outselling Krugerrands.

In 1988, the Silver Maple Leaf was introduced. Mintages have varied from a low of 101,000 in 1997 to a high of 28.2 million in 2013. The Silver Maple Leaf is one of the most popular silver coins in existence.

In recent years, Canada has introduced new security features to the Gold Maples as anti-counterfeiting measures. In 2013, a laser-micro-engraved textured maple leaf was added on a small area of the reverse side of the coin. In the center of this mark is a numeral denoting the coin’s year of issue, only visible under magnification.

Design

The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, and it has gone through three iterations. The portrait on the original Maple Leaf was used from 1988-1989; the second portrait—of the queen in her 64th year—from 1990-2003; and the third portrait from June 2003—which features a crownless queen the year after her Golden Jubilee—to the present.

The reverse displays a large maple leaf, symbol of the country, a design that has remained unchanged. However, beginning in 2014, a mintmark was introduced as a security measure. It is a small maple leaf, micro-engraved into the reverse. The mintmark contains the coin's year of issue and represents a major enhancement of bullion coin security.

Precious Metal Composition

The Gold Maple Leaf is pure .9999 fine gold (24 carat). At the time of its issue, it was the only such coin in the world. The Krugerrand and the Eagle are both alloys– each contains a full troy ounce of gold, but are .9167 fine (22 carat). Some people like the color of pure gold; others don’t mind the slightly different tint of an alloy. Some are attracted to the unrivaled fineness of 24-carat gold. And still others appreciate the Canadian coin’s simplicity of design.

Since gold content is the same, whichever one prefers is a matter of personal taste. Pure gold coins are softer and scratch more easily than alloys, which were intended to stand up to the stresses of circulation. Leafs are particularly popular in India and the Far East, where pure gold is the most accepted and familiar form of bullion.

Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, the Silver Maple Leaf is a full troy ounce and is .9999 fine. The purity is attested to by the words “Fine Silver” and “Argent Pur,” which means the same in French.
